Well, lucky me, my computer just caught a major virus and has f'ed my comp up royally. All is not lost though, as 1) I've had this same virus before and was able to fix things in the past 2) I'm tech savvy enough and have the right software to fix this problem 3) I know how to go about fixing it, it's just going to take a while.
Basically what the virus does is it corrupts every file extension within windows so that it doesn't know what to do with anything (including .exe's). So yeah...it's pretty nasty. Luckily, I have Lavasoft's Ad-watch, which monitors and can either allow or restrict any changes to the windows registry. This program loads during startup so it can stop the virus before it does its dirty work. So you're probably thinking: "Well, sounds simple enough, just stop all changes to the registry. What's the problem?" Well, the problem is that after the virus struck initially, I had to do a system restore in order to get my comp to do anything period. As result, a number of changes have to be made by Windows to the registry in order for Windows to be restored and run properly. The problem is, the virus is still trying to alter my registry too. Ad-watch doesn't just tell you "this alteration is good and this alteration is bad", they basically all look the same. So what this means is I have to go through, one by one, and test each alteration. The first alteration that I'm prompted about during bootup I'll hit accept the first time, see if windows is stable afterwards, and then continue to the next. Every time I accept or deny incorrectly, I have to restore again and start the whole process over, as this either screws up the restore or allows the virus to do what it wants. This is a pretty long and tedious process as there are about 20 alterations in total to go through.
So uh...yeah...I'm gonna be out of commission for a little while. Hopefully this won't take me too horribly long to fix.
UPDATE: 06/20/07 - 5:40 AM
Well, I think I got everything back to normal. Only took about 3 hours too. Not too shabby! It's not completely certain at this point, but everything's looking good. I'm going to have to reinstall a few programs due to the initial system restore, but nothing major.
Okay...now I REALLY have to go to bed.
